Function and Purpose of Signs

This Manual contains Standards, Guidance, and Options for the
signing within the right-of way of all types of highways open to
public travel. The functions of signs are to provide regulations,
warnings, and guidance information for road users. Both words and
symbols are used to convey the messages. Signs are not typically
used to confirm rules of the road.
