Scope of standard Committee E-7 on Nondestructive Testing has, since its inception, assumed responsibility for presenting advanced concepts of control and inspection testing to the membership of the Society, and through it to the general and specific industrial communities. In keeping with this responsibility, the present symposium was initiated for a two-fold purpose: (1) to establish a background of unclassified literature on a limited number of specific applications of nondestructive testing; (2) to stimulate thinking by outlining many of the present nondestructive testing problems in the missile industry. This new, but highly dynamic industry is beset with a multitude of problems involving the measurement of properties and evaluation of materials for extremely severe environmental conditions. Missile materials must withstand severe temperature, pressure, radiation corrosion, and stress levels to meet design performance. Consequently, nondestructive test methods must be able to furnish quantitative information to ensure that the proper quality levels have been met. It is obvious that existing nondestructive test methods must be modified-in some instances severely-in order to meet this challenge. However, there remains a vast range of problems relating to performance prediction, for which no existing method is adequate. These problems open a new vista for the nondestructive testing profession and will undoubtedly result in a great advance in the state of the art during the next few years.
